Samsung vs Apple verdict may influence Google & Tizen

We all have heard about the Samsung vs Apple lawsuit, we all have heard the outcome, we also all know that Samsung is a multi-OS company. Now, what we do not know is how the verdict will influence projects with Android and also the Tizen project. The relationship with Google and Samsung has to be cracking a bit with the verdict as Google recently said:

“The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system and several are re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office.”

The statement indicated that the U.S. software giant was drawing the line between itself and its major customer Samsung, despite the fact that some features Apple said Samsung’s wireless devices infringed are built into Android. They include features like pinching the screen or tapping to zoom.

With Google saying things like that – Samsung is poised now to move into the Tizen project harder than ever. Why should Samsung use someone else’s product to be successful when they themselves can create something with more potential? Samsung has the time, the money, and the drive to do just that. In-fact, Samsung has said it many times in the past that it does not want to count on Google for everything…

“Samsung has always chosen the multi-OS strategy, not betting entirely on the Android,” said a Samsung official.

Tizen, a new open-source software platform, is one that Samsung is building together with the Linux Foundation and Intel.

As the firm has been integrating its proprietary Bada platform with Tizen, Samsung plans to apply the new platform on smartphones, netbooks and smart televisions as early as 2013.

Samsung Plans Video Chat For ChatOn

Samsung’s ChatOn messaging app is already available across multiple platforms, but it faces stiff competition from similar services such as Kakao Talk, which remains hugely popular in its native South Korea. Samsung could be stepping up its game in this space, however — according to DDaily, the company is developing a video chat service that will let you talk to your ChatOn contacts over 3G or 4G mobile networks as well as Wi-Fi. The video functionality is reportedly set to debut on Android first, but Samsung could subsequently bring it to other platforms.

While it wouldn’t be the first cross-platform 3G video chat service, with apps like Fring having provided similar functionality for years, it could make a splash even if restricted to Android. An anonymous Samsung employee told DDaily that “nothing has been decided” about the possibility of pre-installing ChatOn on the company’s smartphones.
