Samsung vs Apple verdict may influence Google & Tizen

We all have heard about the Samsung vs Apple lawsuit, we all have heard the outcome, we also all know that Samsung is a multi-OS company. Now, what we do not know is how the verdict will influence projects with Android and also the Tizen project. The relationship with Google and Samsung has to be cracking a bit with the verdict as Google recently said:

“The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system and several are re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office.”

The statement indicated that the U.S. software giant was drawing the line between itself and its major customer Samsung, despite the fact that some features Apple said Samsung’s wireless devices infringed are built into Android. They include features like pinching the screen or tapping to zoom.

With Google saying things like that – Samsung is poised now to move into the Tizen project harder than ever. Why should Samsung use someone else’s product to be successful when they themselves can create something with more potential? Samsung has the time, the money, and the drive to do just that. In-fact, Samsung has said it many times in the past that it does not want to count on Google for everything…

“Samsung has always chosen the multi-OS strategy, not betting entirely on the Android,” said a Samsung official.

Tizen, a new open-source software platform, is one that Samsung is building together with the Linux Foundation and Intel.

As the firm has been integrating its proprietary Bada platform with Tizen, Samsung plans to apply the new platform on smartphones, netbooks and smart televisions as early as 2013.

Running Android Apps On Tizen (VIDEO)

Tizen is a brand new platform with a focus on HTML5, and just like any platform in its infancy, it has the challenge of getting developers on board. While, Intel and Samsung have been doing a lot, like giving all attendees of the Tizen conference a Tizen developer device (view video), there’s still a bit of work to do. Open Mobile’s ‘Application Compatibility Layer (ACL)’ lets you run Android apps on a Tizen device with 100% compatibility and with the same responsiveness as you would expect on a native Android device.

Samsung’s First Tizen Device Prototype! (VIDEO)

Back in January, Samsung announced it was planning to merge its homegrown bada operating system with the open-source Tizen platform, which the Korean company has been developing with Intel. Four months later, we can take a peek at one of the first Tizen powered Samsung devices thanks to this leaked video walk-through.

The “barebones,” prototype handset in this clip, which is apparently being handed out to Tizen developers right now, is packing a 1.2GHz dual-core ARM processor and a 4.3-inch HD (1024 x 720) display.

The Tizen user interface, apps, and functions look a lot like a mash-up between bada and Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on Android, presumably thanks to the Korean company’s heavy influence on the platform. All of the core applications are developed with HTML5, according to the video, and the device is designed to use just one physical home button — like the iPhone

North American carrier Sprint joins Tizen Association

Sprint announced today that is joinging the Tizen Association, a group focused on both the marketing and education of the Tizen platform in the industry and helping to develop its presence in the market. With that announcement, Sprint has become the first North American carrier to join the Association. Along with the announcement, they also announced that Fared Adib, vice president of product development at Sprint, will be joining the Tizen board of directors. Other carriers already in the Tizen Association are NTT DOCOMO, Orange, SK telecom, Telefónica and Vodafone. In my opinion, it is interesting that Sprint is becoming part of the Tizen Association. Sprint’s announcement of today’s news can be found after the picture and after the break….
