How to install a Bada widget .zip file?

Postby Pitouke » Thu Mar 31, 2011 4:24 am

Hello,

I'm new on this forum and have a question about installing widgets on the Wave 8500.

On badawidget are a lot of widgtets available to download. What I don't undurstand is what I have to do exactly to install them.
When I click to download, I install the .zip file on my pc desktop.
In this .zip file are a few maps like "ccs", "images", "js" and other stuff like config.xml, icon.png, index.html and signature1.xml. I don't see any .wgt file... Is this normal? I read on the site something about changing the zip into .wgt file but it's not clear to me at all...

What do I have to do step-by-step to install these widgets on my Wave 8500? (So as from downloading and axtracting on my Pc to transferring to the Wave)

Thx a lot!!!

hello answer is very simple. you have to rename the .zip file to .wgt. for example if the file you downloaded was example.zip just rename it to example.wgt
Please hit the thanks meter if i have helped you! :herb

I'm sorry but apparently it's not that simple for me... I'm a real dummy...

I have the zip file on the desktop. When I rename the file to "example.wgt on the desktop and than double-click on the file I see that the name is changed to example.wgt.zip ... So how do I get rid of the .zip? I use WinZip.
I also tried to rename the file AFTER I double clicked on the .zip file. But when I right-click on the name of the file, the "rename" button is not highlighted... Do I also need to extract the files?

So pls, maybe you can explain me step by step? that would be very kind!!!

What OS are you running? The reason your having rename problems is because you have file extensions hidden you need to unhide file extensions then rename as told previously. Tell me your OS and Ill tell you how to unhide file extensions.

if you are running xp. save the .zip file to a folder anywhere other than the desktop. then open that folder using my computer. go to tools>folder options. click on the "view" tab. u will see a list of advanced settings. uncheck the box that says "hide extensions for known filetypes"
if its not xp no idea sry........maybe dane can help

Well... None at the moment... I'll buy the Wave 8500 in a week or 2... I was just looking for all the info I needed to get started right away...

So actually I need to transfer the .zip file to my (future) Wave and there I need to rename it?
Or otherwise, how can I contact you when I've bought the phone, and still facing dufficulties? Pm maybe?

Thx!!!!

Ooowkaaay...

I misunderstood.... Sorry for that! You were talking about OS of my computer... I have XP Home Edition.

So I did like you told me: Put .zip in a folder. Than go to Tools--Folder Options--View. I unchecked the "Hide extensions for known filetypes". Do I also need to uncheck "Show hidden files and folders"?
When I do all these steps I can indeed change the name of the example.zip to example.wgt, but firstI get the warning "If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it"? So when I would say "Yes" it's renamed to example.wgt, and than I can transfer this file to the Wave?

Many thanks for all the good advise already!!

unchecking "Show hidden files and folders" is not needed. hidden files are mainly system files. the steps you did are correct and now you can just transfer the .wgt file to your wave using mass storage mode aka drag and drop. click on the wgt. it will show a warning "this widget is not approved by samsung blablabla" click yes widget will install. you can delete the .wgt file now it will not be needed. go to homescreen tap on widget button, scroll through till you find your widget and click on it. voila!!! you are done!!
oh and welcome to the forum:)
