No Bada 2.0 for Wave 525 and 533!

Some bad news for Samsung Wave 525 and 533 owners. A little while back Samsung had announced that all its Wave devices running bada OS will be updated to bada 2.0 OS. But in a recent email sent to bada developers, Samsung has said that now Wave devices will be divided into two groups; ‘Wave (WQVGA)’ and ‘Wave (WQVGA) _1.1 only.’

The first group, Wave (WQVGA) will receive the much awaited bada 2.0 update supporting both 2.0 and 1.1 API. This includes the devices such as Wave 575, 578 and 723. On the other hand the second group includes Wave 525 and 533 and they will only support bada 1.1 API and not get the much awaited bada 2.0 update.

Not all Samsung Wave phones will get the bada 2.0 update. The two models that are not in the “lucky group” (of devices that will get the update) are Wave 525 and Wave 533, both of which are stuck on the version 1.1. However, not all is gloom and doom, with Korean giant preparing the so called “Value Pack” for these two devices.

And if you don’t know what Value Pack is all about, here’s what Samsung has to say about it:

“Samsung is offering “Value Pack” upgrade for devices that do not support bada 2.0 upgrade due to hardware limitations such as main chipset performance and available network speed. “Value Pack” is designed to offer the same bada 2.0 user experience and service as much as possible despite the hardware limitations.”

Finally, before I let you go I must add we’re not that surprised these two relatively old phones are stuck to the old version of bada — after all, there’s only so much Samsung can do to make things run smoothly on the old hardware…

More Details and Specs on Wave 2 and Wave 2 PRO (Including Release Info)

With the announcement last week of two new Wave phones being added to the Bada family, we are now learning more about the specs found in each of them. Remember, this is preliminary stuff but according to the information at hand here is what we know. The Bada OS will be found on the Samsung Wave 2 S5250 and Wave 2 Pro S5330.

Both phones feature a 3.2-inch touchscreen with WQVGA display and 80MB of internal memory (expandable to 16GB). Multimedia wise, the phones pack a punch! Each phone is fitted with a 3MP camera that lets users record MPEG4 videos in H.263 and H.264 formats and features geo-tagging. The built-in music player incorporates SoundAlive and Music Recognition software. Users can also listen to and record music on the go with FM radio that the phone integrates. Both phones have bluetooth, A-GPS and WiFi 802.11n connectivity. The Wave 2 and Wave 2 Pro supports quad-band GSM/EDGE networks but no 3G. They also both run the Bada OS with TouchWiz 3.0 UI and Social Hub. The big difference is the Wave 2 Pro adds a side-slide QWERTY keyboard. No Network Wave Released

Ok so does this mean I could use my Verizon SIM card on the Wave? I do not think so since Verizon is CDMA but those with T-Mobile or AT&T possibly could in fact use the Wave. According to Articlerich.com,

The new Samsung S8500 Wave has now been made available as a SIM Free phone, this means that this latest Samsung handset is unlocked to all mobile networks allowing the user to insert a SIM card of their choice.

Basically, you could take your AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card out of your Hero or Nexus One and pop it into the Wave. This all depends on the banding in the phone. If there are US GSM bands in the phone, this will be possible. I will keep people updated on this as more information comes in.

Other cool things about the SIM free Wave is that it’ll be featured as a “pay-as-you-go” phone and by the standard monthly contract system. The SIM Free Samsung Wave will also be great news for people who struggle to get past the strict network credit checks when buying a contract phone. Since the Wave will be SIM Free, there will be no such checks when purchasing the Samsung Wave as a SIM Free handset.
